Voltage Regulator

The need for regulation:

Why do we need a voltage regulator to supply +5v when a 6v battery should be close enough?

Logic chips generally require a very stable +5v supply. The high speed CMOS family 74HC requires a supply between 2V minimum and 5.5V absolute maximum. Running this at 6v is likely to damage the ICs. Secondly, the regulator is able to respond to small fluctuations in the input voltage caused by other loads off the same battery switching on and off. It guarantees a +5v output signal as long as its input is a certain voltage above 5v (called the drop-out voltage), and the load on it is not too high. Single chip voltage regulators are available with a range of output current capabilities, from 100mA up to 5A and higher. For our purposes, using 74HC logic at relatively low frequencies, a 1 Amp regulator should be easily sufficient.


The regulator consists of a series pass transistor, and a feedback control circuit. It continuously monitors its output voltage, and compares it with a fixed voltage reference (+5V in this case). If the output voltage rises as the load current falls, it turns the pass transistor off slightly more. As more current is drawn, the voltage at the output of the regulator will start to drop, and the regulator will turn its pass transistor on slightly more to keep it up to +5v.

The capacitor between the battery and the regulator is required to ensure there are no high frequency variations in the supply to the regulator. The capacitor after the regulator is required to supply high frequency variations in the current drawn by the logic chips, which the regulator is not fast enough to react to.

The above circuit Diagram gives the regulated power supply in various ranges starting from +5v to +12v.

These supplies can be used for various purposes such as Vcc for integrated circuits, supply for IR Led, and wherever constant power supply is required.

One of my robot was a Line Tracker. I made it with Abhishek, Bimal, and Kartik. We finished it just within 6 hours.The circuit diagram is given below:

011.jpgWhile in the very first year I decided to participate for the robotic competition in our college.Prior to the project I didnt know much about robots. Then I searched the net and updated my knowledge. Me and my three friends Abhishek,Kartik and Nilesh made a single frequency remote controll car for the first time. We cleared the elimination round and stood second, with our car design being the best. Abhishek handled the car during the race and he drove excellently on the first attempt. Due to certain (over excitement) faults we finally finished fourth.We participated the same car in Robo-Football match.

Modified Car at FOOT-PRINTS 2008

I modified my first robo-car to participate in MSU,Foot-Prints 2008.

As mentioned in its website I made it dual frequency, with a new design.
Again as usual my design was excellent but we (Me, Abhishek & Kartik) were not happy as those (MSU) people allowed single frequency cars too. And not only that but they also allowed readymade toy cars! So they have crossed all the limits of cheating, thats what I can say.
Even in its website it was clearly mentioned that to qualify for best design one should have detailed drawing of car. But surprisingly it was only one team having so and that was ours. Here are some pics of my robo-car.

Micro Mouse

Though I didnt had any knowledge about microcontroller and programming in my third semister, I decided to make MicroMouse for IIT-TechFest 2008, Powai. It was a challenge for me even to clear the elemination round. When I asked my friends to accompany me they laughed and just refused saying that its not our work. But it was clear in my mind to make it. So I searched the net and found the adequate material about Micro Mouse.Taking help from one of my friend, Kushal Kapadia, I made the hardware part successfully. But due to lack of programming knowledge I could’nt complete my Mouse.
Still I am happy that atleast I prepared the hardware part successfully using 89c51 microcontroller. I will try my level best to finish the project within next six months and will definately clear atleast the elimination round in TechFest 2009.Below are few pics of my Mouse.
